PORT
LAVACA - Calhoun coach Jon House would like nothing better than to see a repeat
performance from senior Tyler McAfee and junior Josh Daniels.
McAfee
had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Daniels had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the Sandcrabs' 71-62 overtime Class 4A area playoff win over
Edcouch-Elsa on Friday night.
House
isn't concerned about McAfee or Daniels adding to their stats, but he knows if
his post players perform well in Calhoun's regional quarterfinal game against
Roma, the Sandcrabs have a good chance of coming out
on top.
"We
can not turn the ball over and we have to pound them inside," House said.
"They do not match up inside."
Calhoun
(20-13) has done a good job of adjusting in playoff wins over San Antonio South
San and Edcouch-Elsa and hopes to do the same when it meets Roma (21-11) today
at 7:30 p.m. at the Steinke
Center on the campus of
Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The
Calhoun-Roma winner will advance to the Region IV-4A tournament semifinal game
on Friday at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's University in San Antonio against the New Braunfels Canyon-Lake Travis winner.
"We've
got a little group that has been playing together for a long time," Daniels
said. "We know that Calhoun has not done that well in the past. But we're
not scared to win. I think in the past they were worried more about the name on
the (other) jersey. We feel like we don't have to change what we do, we just
run it."
The Sandcrabs have overcome the stalling tactics of South San
and the run-and-gun style of Edcouch-Elsa.
"We're
well-coached," said junior Marcus Blevins, who made the winning basket
against South San. "When we do what we're supposed to do, we're pretty
good."
Calhoun
battled back from a 13-point deficit against Edcouch-Elsa before outscoring the
Yellowjackets 11-2 in overtime.
"We
stayed the course against Edcouch-Elsa," House said. "We made some
slight adjustments. But you should have seen them after the game. They were in
shock."
Calhoun
is enjoying its best season in memory but the Sandcrabs
are not at all surprised by their success.
"We
knew how good we were," said junior Jackson Gayle. "We just have to
do the things we were coached to do and we know we can be successful."
Roma
advanced to the regional quarterfinal round with a 67-63 area win over Corpus
Christi Moody, which twice defeated Calhoun during District 30-4A play. But the
Gladiators lost twice to Edcouch-Elsa in District 32-4A play.
"Roma
picked up the intensity and Moody didn't," House said. "They're
disciplined, they shoot real well and they don't turn the ball over. But our
guys are doing well. We're really starting to play really well like we did
earlier in the season at the Tuloso-Midway
tournament. We're starting to regain our swagger."
While
Calhoun will face Roma for the first time, two regional quarterfinal games will
feature the third meeting of first- and third-place teams from the same
district.
Gonzales
(21-8) and Cuero (17-11) face off in a District 29-3A rematch today at 7 p.m. in
Floresville. Gonzales, the district champion, defeated Cuero twice in district
play, once in overtime. The winner will advance to semifinals of the regional
tournament on Friday at 7:45 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville
against the Lytle-Wimberley winner.
Moulton
(14-15) and Flatonia (13-19) meet in a District 28-1A, Division I rematch today
at 7 p.m. in Schulenburg. Moulton, the district champion, defeated Flatonia
twice in district play. The winner will advance to the regional tournament on
Friday at the Delco Center in Austin
against the Snook-Anderson Shiro winner.
Schulenburg
(26-3) will be seeking to return to the Class 2A regional tournament for the
second straight year when it meets Hempstead (24-5) in a regional quarterfinal
game today at 7 p.m. in Sealy. The Shorthorns have advanced to the regional
tournament three times in the last six years under coach
Richard Hoogendorn. The Schulenburg-Hempstead winner
will meet the San Antonio Cole-Santa Rosa winner on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Delco Center
in Austin.
Waelder
(23-4) captured an 83-72 overtime win against Leakey in the area round and will
meet Richland Springs in the Class 1A, Division II regional quarterfinals today
at 7:30 p.m. in Blanco. The winner will advance to the regional tournament on
Friday at the Delco Center in Austin
against the Goodrich-Centerville winner.
